Chirp updates itself: every release is delivered through the built-in updater, and the download buttons on the Mac and Windows pages always point to the latest build. Notes are grouped by month.
September 2026
All platforms
- Recordings are now deleted as soon as they have been transcribed. Only the text is kept in your local history. Audio playback of old recordings has been removed.
- New start and stop sounds, so you know when Chirp is listening. The start sound plays the instant you press the key and is kept out of the recording itself.
- macOS: a short confirmation sound after the text has been pasted.
June 2026 — Windows release
Windows
- New signed Windows installer (.exe), built for Windows 10 and 11 (x64).
- Windows is now on the same automatic update channel as macOS.
- The taskbar and installer now show the Chirp icon.
- No more console windows flashing while Chirp works.
macOS
- The Fn key now asks for the right permission (Accessibility), and “Open System Settings” takes you straight to the right pane.
- Chirp now appears correctly in the microphone privacy settings after you are asked for access.
All platforms
- Rapidly starting and stopping a recording can no longer leave the microphone stuck.
- No more white flash when the app opens.
- CSV export no longer produces an empty file when there is nothing to export.
- The About screen shows the real app version and links to the current privacy policy and terms.
April 2026
- Signed, in-place automatic updates.
- Clearer macOS permission prompts, including a live indicator that the Fn key is being detected.
- Chirp asks for microphone access on first launch instead of waiting until you record.

- Recordings are capped at 5 minutes, with a countdown during the last 20 seconds.
- You can cancel a recording without transcribing it.

January 2026 — Rebuilt from the ground up
- Chirp was rebuilt on Tauri 2 with a Rust core, replacing the older Electron app.
- On-device transcription with whisper.cpp and a bundled English model.
- Global shortcut, clipboard copy and (on macOS) automatic pasting.
- Searchable history with CSV export.
- An optional floating record button.
