Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use Chirp?

Press Fn (or Option+M) on a Mac, or Alt+M on Windows, to start recording. Speak, then press the same key again to stop. Chirp transcribes on your computer and, on a Mac, pastes the text where your cursor is. On Windows the text is copied to your clipboard; press Ctrl+V to paste it. You can also use the optional floating record button.

Is an internet connection required?

Not for transcription: speech is turned into text on your device. Chirp checks for updates when it starts, and once you have a paid license it checks the license about once a day. A licensed copy keeps working for up to 7 days offline.

What languages are supported?

English only. Chirp uses an English-only speech model and there is currently no option to change languages.

How can I improve transcription accuracy?

For best results:

  • Speak clearly and at a moderate pace
  • Use a good quality microphone when possible
  • Minimize background noise
  • Ensure your device's microphone permissions are enabled

The Fn key doesn't start recording on my Mac

Chirp needs the Accessibility permission to detect the Fn key and to paste text. Open Chirp's Permissions screen, or go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility and turn Chirp on. Option+M works as an alternative shortcut.

Is there a time limit per recording?

Yes, 5 minutes. Chirp counts down the last 20 seconds and then stops and transcribes automatically.

Technical Issues

Chirp isn't detecting my microphone

Make sure Chirp has microphone access. On a Mac, check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone (Chirp's Permissions screen has a button that opens it). On Windows, check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Also make sure the right input device is selected and no other app is holding the microphone.

The transcription seems inaccurate

Chirp uses a small, fast English model, so audio quality matters. A headset or a microphone close to your mouth, a quiet room, and complete sentences all help. Specialist terms, names and strong accents are the most common sources of mistakes.
